Dearborn Heights, MI – The Crestwood School District proudly joins Wayne County Commissioner David Knezek in acknowledging the extraordinary contributions of Mrs. Laura Benavides, a remarkable 8th Grade English Language Arts teacher at Riverside Middle School, recently named Teacher of the Month.
Mrs. Benavides, a product of Holy Redeemer High School and a graduate of Wayne State University, holds a Master’s degree from Marygrove College. She has devoted over two decades to education, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. Her journey from journalism to teaching showcases her passion for learning and her commitment to nurturing young minds.
In her 22 years in education, Mrs. Benavides has not only excelled in teaching but also played a crucial role outside the traditional scope of classroom duties. As a co-sponsor of the National Junior Honor Society at Riverside, she has been pivotal in fostering leadership and academic excellence among students.
Her influence extends far beyond Riverside Middle School. Numerous former students, now thriving in various professions, attribute their success to the foundation laid during their time in Mrs. Benavides’s classroom. They remember her not only as an educator but also as a mentor who has left an indelible mark on their lives.
During a recent gathering, Superintendent Dr. Youssef Mosallam, Associate Superintendent Andria O’Hara, Principal Scott Casebolt, and Assistant Principal Batool Eid joined Commissioner Knezek in expressing their admiration and support for Mrs. Benavides’s work.
Reflecting on her career, Mrs. Benavides shares, “The connections I’ve made with my students over the years are incredibly fulfilling. Watching them succeed in various fields, from medicine to entrepreneurship, brings me immense joy. They remind me why teaching is such a rewarding profession.”
